The end of a year is a time for examining what is, and is not going well in our lives. It is a time for reflection and for making adjustments necessary in order to create a healthier, happier, year ahead. Feng Shui is an ancient environmental system that can be used to analyze and adjust features in our living and working spaces that directly and indirectly influence our emotional and physical well-being. By examining our spaces from a feng shui perspective, we can contemplate the year that has passed and become prepared for the months ahead.
1. Start by taking a good look at where you have spent the most time during this past
year. Whether it is your living room, bedroom, car, office, or somewhere else, that environment has had an effect on your day-to-day well- being and state of mind.
Name ONE thing that you would like to improve the most (color, furnishings, size of space, light, comfort, etc.) about this space and make a commitment to change it by the end of this month. If the space is dark, add lighting and mirrors, if the color is not pleasing, paint or change the artwork and accessories, if the furniture isn’t comfortable, replace it,…you get the idea. Consider this improvement as an upgrade to your life during the months ahead! Your future self will thank you for it!
2. What area of your life gave you the most stress these past twelve months? Each compass direction in the home corresponds to a Life Aspiration Area (wealth, career, etc.). Chapter six in my book, Feng Shui that Makes Sense
tells you exactly how to determine the location of each area in your home. Take a look at the area in your home that corresponds to the area in which you feel you were the least happy. Is that area cluttered? Do you have the proper elements placed there? Have you minimized the elements that are detrimental to this meridian point? Make optimizing this point a priority to prepare for the coming year.
3. Do you have an area in your home or workspace that has accumulated clutter over the past twelve months? If so, commit to clearing out and organizing that space before the month is over. Getting rid of what no longer serves you makes space for newer and better energy to come into your life.
4. Is there something in your home or workspace that is broken or needs repair? Living on a
daily basis with things that are not in top working order creates frustration and negativity. Often these things are minor, yet we procrastinate getting them fixed for months or even years. I’ll bet almost every one of you reading this article can think of at least one thing that is not working properly in your home or workplace (a light bulb that needs changing, a door that squeaks, an electrical socket that doesn’t work, a leg on a chair that is crooked, etc.) These things may seem small, but the accumulated aggravation that they create adds up. Make a promise to yourself to repair or replace at least one of these things by the end of the month and you’ll start the new year off with one less irritation!
5. Celebrate your success. Did you achieve a goal that you had set for yourself for the past
year? If so, create an award to symbolize that success and display it so you can see it during the coming year. There are a lot of templates online for certificates, awards, etc. Create an award for your achievement, frame it and place it somewhere you can see it. Success breeds success, and having that visual reminder of what you’ve accomplished helps fuel future achievements.
The end of the year marks a time of wrapping up the old and preparing for the new. By addressing things in our surroundings that do not support what we wish to bring into our lives in the future, we make way for bigger and better events, people, and achievements to come in. Happy Old Year!
